Based on interviews with married individuals, separate from their couple, a team of researchers were able to come up with the five types of marriage.
The couples studied also didn't stay fixed in one type of marriage, they bounced around between them or combined them at times. The five types are Vital Marriage, where the couple is very emotionally and physically close, Total Marriage which is similar to Vital Marriage but the couple has their own interests, Passive-congenial Marriage where the partners are superficial with each other and look for activities outside the relationship for happiness, Devitalized Marriage where the couple is bored with each other and finally, Conflict-habituated Marriage where the partners are incompatible. Almost 60% of the couples fit into the first three types of marriage, and some did not fit a type at all. Although you should never put your relationship into such a narrow point of view, it is useful to identify with one or many of these relationship types in order to find an issue or make things better.
